What is a Boffin ?
Boffin was an endearing colloquial term used by RAF and RCAF airmen during WWII for the electronics engineers that kept tinkering with the aircraft to implement new radio location and radar technology. These innovations helped the pilots do their jobs more effectively and safely.
In my younger days, I kept taking mechanical and electronic things apart in order to figure out how they worked and then tried to figure out how to use them for other purposes.
My father, who was a Mosquito pilot during the WWII, used to call me a "Boffin" from time to time. He advised me to pursue a career in Electronics Engineering, so that I could "go and figure out how to build better things". It was good advice.
